I have finally entered the 21st century.

Thanks to my good friends, [profile] pmat and [profile] shakati, who gave me one as a Christmas present, I am now the proud owner of a 3-pod Aerogarden.

For those of my readers who have never heard of an Aerogarden, it's basically a home hydroponics unit. Brown inserts containing seeds extend into a container of water, to which you periodically add nutrients. A special grow light gives your pods light 17 hours a day, while a small pump aerates the water into which their roots will soon extend. The result; green leafy things that come to useful maturity, entirely without soil. Mine is now deployed in my basement, one of the few rooms in the house with flat space available for such things. I have the three spaces in its small tank available for planting filled with sage, tarragon, and tatsui, a salad green that originated in Asia.

If you find yourself interested in obtaining an Aerogarden yourself and want to learn more, check out their website, aerogarden.com. Be warned: acquiring and starting one up is not cheap (I really appreciate your generosity, [profile] pmat and [profile] shakati!). It remains to be seen whether it will save me enough money in produce to be worth running continuously, but I'm betting that we'll at least have some nice tasty fresh plants to eat while I do run it.
