Or at least that's what [livejournal.com profile] esrblog has been calling it. We went to see "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" last Wednesday night with [livejournal.com profile] pmat and [livejournal.com profile] shakati. I'd been planning to write a bit of a review, but Thursday was a workday and we got home late enough from the movie to make that impractical.

As some of the professional reviewers have said, "Kingdom" is something of a nostalgia trip. I enjoyed that part of it, because I really loved two of the previous three movies (didn't like "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" very much). So I was surprised to find myself with mixed feelings about this one. I can't discuss why without generating spoilers (see below), but I can summarize the good and bad attributes of the movie without getting into spoiler country.

On the plus side of the ledger: All of the actors in the major roles were great. Harrison Ford seemed to drop 20 years as he got back into character. Karen Allen positively blossomed as the capable Marian Ravenwood, and Cate Blanchett was surprisingly effective as the Russian villainess. There were the usual ton of references to the other movies, which were well-done and funny, and the CGI was appropriately used to enhance the plot.

On the minus side: For some reason, the movie as a whole seemed less lively and fun to me than the previous movies. I think this is the aspect the reviewers who didn't like the film picked up on, but each one offers a different theory as to why. Most blame it on the performance of one of the actors, but I don't buy that; as I said above, I think all of the actors, particularly the ones in the major roles, were very good. I also don't think it's due to the fact that I'm nearly 10 years older than I was when the last one appeared, because I really enjoyed more recent movies I've seen that had similar plots, such as the National Treasure movies.

So here's my theory.

Warning: Contains plot spoilers! )

So, overall, if you loved the other movies, you'll probably like this one too. Just bear in mind that in some ways, it's different from the others.
