In line with my New Year's resolution to take care of household matters I've been letting slide, I went out to our local Target store yesterday afternoon to shop for cheap bookcases.
I found only one, but since it was a three-shelf model for only $19.99, I bought it. The label claimed that it could be assembled entirely without tools, and upon getting it home and opening the package, I saw how they managed this feat. They did it by requiring the hapless purchaser to mate lots of fragile-looking, itsy-bitsy plastic "screw lock" parts instead of using actual screws and nails. For that reason, and because the directions were almost entirely pictorial, with no explanatory text other than captions, it took me almost an hour-and-a-half to complete what should have been at most a 45-minute job.
Fully assembled and loaded with books, the bookcase looks great--except where one slightly-loose (and eminently untightenable, because of the design of the blasted thing) screw lock has allowed a 1/8 inch gap to form between the side panel and the top.
Grrr.
