Early this morning, [livejournal.com profile] esrblog's sister came over, to help us with a long-postponed task--clearing out the junk in the "storage" half of our basement that we will never use again.

It took about four hours, resulted in about 15 full bags of trash, miscellaneous odd articles that will need to be put out for our Borough's bulk trash pick up next weekend (which is why this had to be done today), about 10 boxes of used books to be donated to a used book shop, and a substantial quantity of cardboard and unsalable books (e.g., coverless paperbacks, which are not supposed to be resold) for the recycling bins. We thought about renting a dumpster, but the price (over $300) was more than a bit of a deterrent for us.

A significant quantity of old but reusable furniture is left. [livejournal.com profile] esrblog's sister knows a local woman who has been known to accept such items for consignment and resale; she's going to check into that for us. Huzzah!

We still have some cleaning (that half of the basement is filthy with lint, and cat-litter dust) to do, and a fair amount of reorganizing of what's left, and the question of what to do with the scrap lumber and sheet insulation that came with the house, but we have regained an impressive amount of space anyway.

I'm relieved, but apprehensive. The process of carting out the items resulted in my getting a better look at the back of the house, and finding items that badly need repair.

Also, the task was emotionally harder than I expected it to be. I was confronted with crafts I have long since ceased to engage in, and realized that chattels I had once prized were now nothing more than junk to me.

We also found some wrapped Christmas presents, which we had apparently misplaced, for a friend who we had heard died several years ago.

On the other hand, any kind of cleaning is also a lesson in the potential of repurposing objects, and the value of making a fresh start. I think I'll be glad we've done the work, once I get some rest and time to recover. [livejournal.com profile] esrblog is napping now. Later, we'll have a nice dinner and go see "Iron Man 2" to reward ourselves for our virtue.
