Late last week, as I ejected a Mythbusters' DVD from my computer, my monitor blinked, and then changed resolution to...1024 x 760, which is much lower than what I normally use.
esrblog examined, and his theory was that the edid information on my monitor had suddenly become screwed up (I think I have this right.) That meant that my computer could no longer ascertain my monitor's maximum resolution, and thus was reverting to the default standard for my window manager. So my 19" monitor was suddenly showing everything at what looked like twice the normal size. In addition, the computer lost my wallpaper.
esrblog and I re-found the wallpaper eventually, but he said there wasn't any way to fix my monitor so its edid information could be read again.
Well. The monitor was over 4 years old anyway.
So I did some browsing, and found a reconditioned LG monitor, 19-inch, max resolution 1600 X 1200, 4:3 ratio, for $169.49 plus $2.95 (yes, $2.95) shipping on overstock.com.
I bought it, and it arrived today. The contrast is great, and the resolution exactly what I want. Life is good.
