Fifteen ... men (?) on a Dead Man's Chest?

Yes, tonight I finally had a chance to see the must-see movie of the summer: Pirates of the Caribbean 2--Dead Man's Chest.

I was pleasantly surprised. Though the action dragged in a couple of spots, the plot hung together much better than had the lashed-up script of the original Pirates movie.
Orlando Bloom got plenty of opportunities to swash some buckle instead of having to be virtuous 100% of the time, and Keira Knightly actually got to do some swashing as well.

Although most of the rest of what I have to say has extremely limited spoiler capacity, I will put the rest of my remarks under an lj-cut. However, if you haven't seen the movie but plan to, I do have one suggestion. Sit through all of the credits; there's a short scene that follows them that you shouldn't miss.

Even if I wanted to, I couldn't put much spoiler bait here because the plot is so intricate and convoluted that my head begins to hurt every time I even think about trying to summarize it. However, some of the themes I'd like to applaud may spoil the surprise of certain plot devices if I reveal them to folk who haven't yet seen the movie, which is why I'm putting them here.

The first theme is large, rolling objects, especially objects powered by humans. The second theme: Indiana Jones homages (expect to see lots of stage business with lost hats and sidearms that suddenly go missing). The third theme: squid. The fourth theme: hoary old movie cliches from the tropics, or, what really happened to the jungle extras who didn't make it into "King Kong." The fifth theme: chase scenes worthy of a French bedroom farce. The sixth theme: just how far Jack Sparrow is willing to go to stay alive. The seventh theme: Johnny Depp chewing scenery as Jack Sparrow. (Okay, so that's not a spoiler--it's the reason the movie has become a record-breaking grosser.)

I can hardly wait for Pirates of the Caribbean 3--Once More, In Stereo, with Keith Richards. :-)
