I stand by what I said in the post. To have made Pepper too much of a modern, stand-on-your-own-feet woman would have been false to canon. But to make Pepper incompetent would have detracted from Stark's character (and, of course, we couldn't have that!). So Paltrow was obliged to split the baby, as it were, with mixed results.
I admit that I winced during the climactic scene where she stands with her hand on the button, looking up to Stark for guidance. Still, she looked great in those suits, didn't she?
