For the obligatory scene in The Sorceror's Apprentice, which [livejournal.com profile] esrblog and I went to see tonight. He also wants to see Inception, but I was so turned off by the trailer that I've been reluctant, despite great reviews from both the critics and SF-fan acquaintances. So we agreed to see Apprentice first, and will probably catch Inception on Monday night, before we head off to the World Boardgaming Championships.

Anyway, there's not that much to say about Apprentice. The backstory and plot are *pure* cheese (if you know anything about the Arthurian legend or seventh century CE Britain, try to temporarily forget what you know before you go see the movie or you may end up throwing things at the screen). But the movie--another nerd-makes-good-and-gets-girl story--has a pleasant energy with a lot of decent, if not world-shattering special effects. Nicolas Cage has good chemistry with the young actor who plays the apprentice, and the actress who plays the apprentice's love-interest is *stunningly* beautiful, in addition to being a decent actress and getting to play a character with a functioning brain. And the movie has a few good lines (which I won't spoilerize here), and a few neat scenes (including the one based on the "sorceror's apprentice" scene from Fantasia).

Overall the movie is forgettable, but fun. I'm not sorry I saw it. Go and see it if you're looking for a light fun popcorn flick.
