Suck zinc at the first sign of an irritated throat. It prevents the movement of rhino viruses from the sinuses into the throat, from where they go on into the rest of the body.
Last I heard, the exact mechanism isn't known, but this treatment has passed multiple clinical studies.
Sadly, it is too late. My throat already was sore for a day and a half when I wrote my post. But thanks for the advice; I'll have to try that the next time.
Keeping zinc on hand and sucking on one whenever I get a scratchy throat has essentially eliminated colds for me. Unfortunately, that doesn't work against bacteria.
