Okay, this is clearly from something I haven't run across yet. I've only recently been amassing sapphires (then again, the option wasn't there before) and I've never even heard of venom-rubies...
If you take the option on the "shroom racing" card that requires Fate, you get to partake in a series of storylets that constitute a mushroom race. To win the race, you must amass an "In the Lead" quality of at least 3. If you "win" the race with an "In the Lead" quality of 4, one of the rewards you get is a single Venom-Ruby.
