Tonight [livejournal.com profile] esrblog and I went to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1).

For once, a movie reviewer who admits to not having read the books was right on the money about the movie. He said it had wonderful atmosphere, but complained that he couldn't figure out what was going on, and accused Yates & Co. of pandering to the fans of Rowling's books and leaving the "Muggles" behind.

He's right. I've read "Deathly Hallows" fairly closely (though it was a few years ago, now) and in a few places *I* found the movie hard to follow. Even given that this movie only went up to Chapter 24 in the seventh book, there was a lot of action Yates had to cut, and some details that he barely alludes to in a blink-and-you've-missed-it fashion.

But, as with the last movie, the parts of the action that were rendered were marvelously well done. I have great hopes that the finale, the final movie of all, will be very worthwhile.
