When I came home tonight, I saw a *huge* book stuffed into the magazine clip of our mailbox. It was the size of a phone book, but the phone company leaves new phonebooks on my driveway when they bother to deliver them, and they usually deliver them in the autumn anyway. So what was this thing?

Closer inspection revealed that it was a boating enthusiast's catalog: West Marine.

Then I understood what was going on.

A few years ago, I was looking for a Christmas present for my brother-in-law, who lives on Long Island and enjoys boating in his spare time. So at the suggestion of his wife, I bought him a $25 gift certificate from West Marine.

I've been on West Marine's e-mailing list ever since. Periodically, I get mail from them, which I delete.

I haven't made another purchase from them since, but apparently they think it's worth it to send me a 5-pound (literally!) catalog anyway.

So for the joy of giving my brother-in-law something he could really use, I get a white elephant that's going into the recycling bin.

On the other hand, there might be something in there that a landlubber like me could use. Guess I'll flip through it first.

I used to get the Aircraft Spruce and Specialty Company catalog. :-)

Getting weird catalogs doesn't bother me. I used to do that a lot, before the World Wide Web became the thriving hive of commerce it is now. But getting a catalog for somebody else's unusual interest, that's different.

& that's what they count on - they figure you bought something once....

Have you considered contacting them & telling them to stop sending it?

With the e-mails, I didn't care--it's simple enough for me to delete an e-mail once every few weeks or so (which is all they previously sent).

Now, I don't know. I could, but again this is the first mailing I've had from them. It may be simplest just to recycle the dead treeage.

I'd give him the catalog - he'd probably like it if he doesn't get it already.

Then there are the people who collect catalogs.......Craigslist - freebie as a curbeside pickup?

But recycling is probably just a good.... and less hassle all round.

I had to contact the Danbury Mint people and have my folks taken off their mailings recently - it was getting ridiculous how much crap they got every week..... and they are confused enough with their mail.

I would, except that I only see him on major holidays (he lives in Montauk, NY--near the far eastern end of Long Island). I bet he gets the catalog anyway--after all, his wife gave me the URL!

I'll probably just recycle it after I see if there's anything I can use in there.
