So it's Wednesday afternoon, and I'm sitting in a coffee house in Austin called Mojo's Daily Grind, with my laptop and several books. Eric is working on a software games engine that he's planning to talk to Steve Jackson about tomorrow, and I'm just hanging out.

Last night, we finally went to the last major barbeque place in the Austin area--The Salt Lick. It's more than 20 miles outside of town, and if you don't know where it is or what it looks like you'll miss it, but the food is *good*. Salt Lick rules!

Eric is still a Rudy's fan, though. ;-)

BTW, there's an awesome Mexican restaurant (not Tex-Mex, but what Texans call "Interior Mexican") called Fonda San Miguel in Austin. I'm really impressed by it, and I've lived in Mexico City. Supposed to have a ridiculously huge Sunday brunch, but I've never managed to make it there on a Sunday morning.

That sounds interesting. I'll have to see if Eric will go for it, of course, but he may; he's had "interior Mexican" on some of his road trips and he likes it much much better than Tex-Mex. Thanks!

I ate at the Salt Lick in the Airport, and I shan't be bothering again. The meat is great, but the slaw, the baked beans, and the potato salad are all nasty.

Maybe it's a recipe thing. Maybe the baked beans are SUPPOSED to be bitter, rather than brown-sugared. Maybe the slaw is SUPPOSED to taste like cabbage in vinegar, rather than sweetly tangy. Maybe the potato salad is SUPPOSED to taste like unsalted, unseasoned boiled potatoes. But the fact that ALL THREE of their sides were unappealing means that I won't be back.

The brisket was delicious, though. I'll give 'em that.

The Salt Lick in the Airport is no comparison, Howard. None whatsoever.

While I'm sure that the airport outpost of The Salt Lick isn't much like the mother ship, so to speak, I assume they are both working off the same basic recipes for the side dishes at least. Judging by Howard's comments, he's no fan of mild potato salad or really tangy cole slaw.

There seems to be two type of cole slaw, creamy and vinegar, and each have their fans. I suppose Mr. Tayler prefers the creamy, and they served a vinegar version. I think [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard prefers the creamy... and I prefer the vinegar. I can deal with creamy, but drain it some. One thing I cannot abide in cole slaw, and I have encountered this, is raisins. That's just... wrong. And removing the raisins doesn't help, the slaw still tastes like raisins rather than cole slaw.

I don't know about the potato salad either of you had, but there's another split. I refuse to eat the cold potato salad, but find the hot potato salad is quite good.

I'm not sure it's fair to judge any restaurant by its airport (or mall, for that matter) version. Though if those versions are actually good, that may be saying something impressive.

I don't like most creamy cole slaws, but what matter more to me than the creamy versus vinegar divide is whether the overall major taste note is sour or tangy rather than bland. I have had creamy cole slaws that are sour/tangy, and I prefer sour notes in general to bland ones.

Same issue with potato salad. I don't care if it uses mayonnaise or not; the main issue is taste notes.

I was sorry not to find macaroni salad, but that may be a Pennsylvania Dutch thing, and not to be found in conjunction with barbecue.

Again, that shows you how different we all are. I really liked the potato salad and cole slaw at Salt Lick. As for the baked beans, I agree that they're more salted than sweet or tangy, but then I don't care much for baked beans no matter how they're prepared.
