Last night, Eric and I went with our friends, [livejournal.com profile] shakati and [livejournal.com profile] pmat to see "Chicken Little", on the theory that it will be gone from the theater long before "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire."

Some movies are cursed by having insufficient plot. That's not true of "Chicken Little." It has plenty of plot. In fact, it has a touch of attention deficit disorder with regard to plot, since its makers have clearly swiped plot elements from a ton of films that have hit the American market over the past 50 years.

The guts of the movie is a cross between "The Bad News Bears" and "War of the Worlds," but there are homages to a vast raft of movies ranging from "The Wizard of Oz," "ET," "Signs," to "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom." All the cliches from all the "nerdy kid trying to impress former jock dad", "nerdy small kid beat up by everybody at school except for the other misfits," are here too, along with a sideswipe at Hollywood's typical take on the "based on a true story" kind of movie and the cutest lil' alien kid this side of a tribble. Best scene in the movie: near the end, where the good citizens of Oakey Acres are in a movie theater watching a flick based on the main story. Worst scene: when the Oakey Acres High School's best ball player, a tomboy fox, gets her brains scrambled while being beamed home from the alien ship and turns into a Bo-Peep-ish Southern belle type.

Did I like it? I think so. It was amusing to watch once, but I have no desire to see it again, and would hardly call it a potential classic.
