Amazingly, US Airways finally did something right; [livejournal.com profile] esrblog's staff arrived this afternoon. The electrician's tape he put on it to identify it was a little torn, but it otherwise was no worse for wear.

I didn't even know what a bo staff was until I googled it. I wouldn't trust anything like that to airline baggage handlers. I'm glad Eric got it back, though. I imagine that the TSA would frown on people who would try to ship weapons on planes these days.

Actually, a coworker of my father, specifically bought a target pistol, which qualifies as a firearm under TSA rules, so he could declare it and pack it in his luggage, and have someone hand carry it out during the baggage claim process. His philosophy was, with the insanity TSA currently is doing, they're *not* going to lose luggage with a firearm inside it.

No more lost luggage!

That's one approach.

Ironically, [livejournal.com profile] esrblog had a firearm confiscated because the airline employee did not hear him declare it. They searched his bag and found it, and were highly annoyed (to say the least) that he did "not" declare it. :-(

How else could we have gotten it home? We wouldn't have been permitted to take it on the plane as carry-on luggage, and the U.S. Postal Service refuses to deliver them (we asked at the school and that's what they told us). It occurred to me after we got home that we might have checked to see if United Parcel Service would ship it, but it's come out okay, so no matter.

Martial arts equipment is not a big problem to carry as checked luggage on planes. This is the second year we've both taken boffer swords and shields on major airlines, and so long as we wrap them well it's not a problem.
