This evening, just before dinner, [livejournal.com profile] esrblog said to me, "I don't feel like working tonight; let's go see "The 3:10 to Yuma," the new Western starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.

So we did. As [livejournal.com profile] landley might put it, "Okay, that was a movie." It had a ton of story. It featured desperate people scheming against other desperate people for life-and-death stakes. It was about honor. Or maybe Stockholm Syndrome; I'm not quite sure. Like most Westerns, it required a lot of suspension of disbelief--particularly if you know anything about period firearms.

But it was an impressive story, and Crowe and Bale, as well as most of the minor characters, turned in stellar performances. I'd recommend it, not just to fans of Westerns, but to folk who enjoy good storytelling.

If it has a drawback, the drawback is this; it doesn't have a happy ending. So don't go if you insist upon seeing only movies with happy endings. Or movies without gore. (It's a Western, so people do get shot, fatally.) On the other hand, the ending it does have was very true to the way the characters develop.

To say more than that would require spoilers, so I won't.

Erm... isn't that a spoiler ? I haven't seen the original or the remake yet.

Seems to me that if you can't tell whether it's a spoiler, it doesn't qualify. And it certainly tells you nothing about the plot...not even what the title means.

OK, since I wasn't clear.

I believe what you said was a spoiler.

Obviously, your opinion may differ from mine.

Clearly, it does. I'm sorry if I offended you, or potentially ruined your enjoyment of what I think is a very good film.

For better or worse, I've found that I'm less sensitive to spoilers than a lot of people. My main concern in writing the post the way I did was not to mislead certain friends of mine, who might misread an unqualified positive recommendation and be very disappointed if they went to see the movie. It did not occur to me that I might be giving away any significant developments to others.

On the other hand, note that I haven't said anything about what I consider to be a happy ending.
