Between dealing with a rush of new stuff at work and a bunch of holiday visiting, I have done very little LiveJournaling so far in 2005. It's too late and I'm too tired to do any deep, meaningful essays tonight, so here's a few personal life developments from the last few weeks, given at random:

I alluded, in a previous LiveJournal entry, to having gotten a raise: $5,000 (before taxes) raise and a $5,000 (also before taxes) Christmas bonus. This was in addition to the piece of luggage that is the firm's "official" gift to us almost every year.

Eric and I got a copy of the DVD set with all five of the Babylon5 movies on it.

Eric thoughtfully bought me a digital camera so that I can take photos and post them on the costume-related web site I help moderate, among other places. Unfortunately, the only machine in the house that will accept downloads from my camera on a routine basis is (of course) Eric's laptop. Eric's current theory of why this is the case is that our desktop boxes all have the wrong type of USB connector.

I am in the process of having a crown put on one of my back molars. I have a temporary crown in place; I get to go back to the dentist at the end of January for the installation of the real one. Miraculously, the process didn't hurt, but it did require having my mouth drained of all fluid and three hands (my dentist's two, and one of his assistant's hands) in my mouth for nearly two hours.

We just bought, on impulse, Vol. 2 of the Warner Brothers Looney Tunes Golden Collection this weekend, and started to watch it. This is the one with "What's Opera, Doc?" on it, for those who love that one as much as Eric does.

The weather here in Malvern has been insanely warm and rainy for early January. If we're lucky, it will stay that way until spring.

Re the camera: The connector conspiracy strikes again. I'm a bit surprised by that, though. Eric asked me to help with evaluating it, and I looked at it as a camera - but didn't think to look at the PC side...

Does it have a removable storage card? You might want to get a USB card reader - and that will be a good thing even if you could hook the camera up directly, since using a card reader saves camera batteries.

And we have a reasonably new "reads all sorts of cards" reader we could lend you to try out, if it does have a card.

Thank you! I would like to take you up on your kind offer. I would like to see if I can get a card reader to work with my machine and my SD card. We can discuss it the next time Eric and I come over to visit--which probably won't be until the weekend.

It didn't come with one, but we just bought one for it. :-)

My concern about the card reader idea is that, if it turns out not to work with my machine, I'll have yet another device I can't use with my own machine. That's not a prospect I relish.

I ran the idea by Eric, and he had a different thought. He believes that if I got a newer motherboard for my machine, that would fix the problem, and he tells me that a card reader would cost about the same amount of money as a motherboard, nowadays.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

pmat has offered to let me try her card reader, so that we can see whether the model she has will work with my machine. If it does, I'll think more seriously about getting one.

Uur card reader was $16 at Amazon. I didn't think motherboards had gotten quite that cheap, but I haven't priced them lately.

I think it's more likely that Eric's knowledge about the cost of card readers is years out of date, and his knowledge about the cost of motherboards isn't. :-)

I'd still like to try out your card reader on my machine, though, if you don't mind.

I am going to the dentist soon, but my appointment on the 24th was canceled do to snow predictions. My upper implants were to be put in, but now I must wait. This surgery would make it dangerous for me to drive and my drivers are (and rightly so) don't like the roads they would need to travel in snow, to get me home. God, I wish it were over.

I have not finished seeing Firefly yet, but it is worth watching.

I am now semi-house bound. As you know I hate winter, and can not wait for the sun to come back.

What hotel are you using at world con this summer. I am leaning toward the Center.

Yeah, I'm not wild about winter, either.

I'm not expecting to make it to Worldcon this time, Scratch. I've got too many other trips I want to make, and I don't want to charge a foreign Worldcon to my credit cards, which I've just paid off after a long slog.

I hope your situation improves and you nail a malefactor in court. Redheads in Glasgow are fun and I still have to photograph you. Let the future take care of itself. Besides, the $ will be stronger by then and maybe you will need to spend the money or go into a higher tax bracket.

Me nailing a malefactor won't, in itself, change my compensation; I'm part of a firm, and we don't do "eat what you kill" here--if we did, I'd starve, because I usually work on pieces of other people's cases. :-)

If redheads are fun in Glasgow, they're fun in Lancaster, Malvern, and the Valley Forge Sheraton too; I'm sure we can find someplace you can do a photo shoot of me this year, whether we make Worldcon or not.

Sorry about that, but Eric and I were away from home the last two weekends in a row--the first at ConFusion and the second at a local weekend-long LARP. And to top it all off, we were (and I still am) fighting off the worse colds we've had in years while doing it. :-(
I have been too exhausted between that and work to do more than deal with my email and check LiveJournal comments every couple of days.

As for SXSW, I have no idea what Eric's schedule is or when they're flying him down, so I don't know what *my* schedule is like. If you want more details, you'll have to go bug him--just as I will.
