The last home on my street is occupied by a very house-proud man and his family. They're so house-proud that they decorate for every major, and some minor, holidays.

This year, he put lighted hearts in his windows, and red and pink and white lights around his windows and on his bushes, for Valentine's Day. On closer inspection, I noticed that there is still a "Christmas tree" in the front window, lighted with red and pink and white for Cupid's favorite day.

Late last week, he took down the Valentine's Day lights. He put up green and white ones instead, and put neon shamrocks in the windows. And the tree? Yup, you've guessed it, it's now a St. Patrick's Day tree. Probably he'll hang eggs on it for Easter--as he did on the outside shrubbery, last year.

Now, all I can think of is this; whatever is he going to do between Easter and the end of May?

There's always Arbor Day for April. As for May... good question.

There's Memorial Day weekend at the end of the month. Posies, perhaps?

I figure he'll haul out the red, white & blue for Memorial Day (as he did last year for the Fourth of July) but that only covers the end of May, really. Still gives him 4-6 weeks without a holiday....

But the posies are possible. Last winter, when he ran out of holidays after Christmas, he hung out a big nylon banner with a snowflake motif on it.

Assuming he knows about Arbor Day (I did not, or at least didn't know it was in April, until your post). Anyway, how do you decorate for Arbor Day? By hanging little images of trees on trees? Yeah, I suppose he might do that....

That's the beauty of it for arbor day: just leave the tree undecorated.

Ah, but if he wanted to just leave *any* thing undecorated, he would be. The fact of the matter is that over the years we've both been living on this street he has looked for and found increasing opportunities to decorate his house, trees and shrubs. Minimalism just doesn't interest him.

There is that. What's he do for 4 July? Take the old tree out in the back yard and light it? Of course that assumes a nasty, natural tree that requires effort at upkeep and would age less than gracefully through the months.

Lots of bunting. Red and white stripes; blue fields with stars, that sort of thing. And U.S. flags, of course.

You could suggest he hang ornaments that look like his mother from the tree in effigy for May . . .

Dear God, no! He'd probably take me seriously, and try to get me lynched.

I'm on our Borough Council, so he knows my face. The only time he ever talked to me was to complain about how haphazardly the trees on our street had been trimmed. (The reason turned out to be that the cutting was necessary for a street-maintenance project, and the trees needed to be cut quickly because we only had the machinery for the work on a rent-by-the-day basis, so the cutting was focused only on one side to give clearance to the machines. Unfortunately, I didn't know this when he talked to me, so he probably still thinks I'm yet another politician who doesn't give a damn....)

Random spring-themed banners! Or start decorating for May Day really, really early.

Yes! May Day! All red lights, with little Haymarket Massacre victim ornaments on the tree . . .

Sadly, these folk (though I believe they are Catholic) do not have your wickedly satirical sense of humor. ;-)

I think they may go the banner route, based on my observation about the "snowflake" banner in a different comment. I'm a bit afraid to think about what he might do for May Day, though....

Cinco de Mayo and Juneteenth come to mind as holidays which are probably undercelebrated in your part of the world. He could be the first one on the block!

Cinco de Mayo's a good idea! And the colors are bright and lively; if I get a chance I may suggest it to him.

But what's Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, as it is called, is the day the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas (June 19, 1865), quite some time on after it was issued on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863.

When I was a kid, black folks in my home town of Columbus, Texas, and all over the state had barbeques, family reunions, etc., on June 19th, to celebrate this event. Now this celebration is spreading throughout the country.

As a native Texan, I frequently have the opportunity to explain this to people in Knoxville.

Definitely worth celebrating!

But, mostly, only if you're a Texan. Somehow I don't think my Yankee neighbor would be interested. (But how do I know? Maybe his wife is an expatriate Texan, or something.) Thanks for the info!
