An acquaintance on one of the mailing lists I frequent reminded me of one of the trailers that preceded Wall-E. Though I winced at the reminder, I originally intended to blog about this dog (all puns intended) of an upcoming movie anyway.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua. The movie's tag line is "50% Warrior. 50% Lover. 100% Chihuahua." (No, I'm not kidding.) The color scheme is loud with yellows, turquoise, and fuchsia. The action: Inane. (The trailer is mostly screenfuls of chihuahuas with feathers on their heads dancing on Aztec-style step-pyramids.) You've heard of blaxploitation flicks? BHC is a chihuahuaxploitation flick. Do NOT let any chihuahua see this movie unless you want to die in your sleep.

The song is catchy though.

I barely noticed it; I was too busy being revolted by dozens of chihuahuas with attitude strutting around in feathers.

We have the feeling that the trailer is the best part of it.

If you are amused by grossly excessive camp, yes. Me, I wanted a barf bag. :-)

I also fall into the camp! I expect the movie to be horrible, but the trailer was awesome.

Hell, the *movie* itself might even be fun (she admits, while folding up the barf bag). Wait a few years, get it in the Netflix queue, arm yourself with Beverages of Choice, popcorn (and a ton of ping pong balls to be thrown at the screen....). But to charge first run prices ($9.50 out where I live, probably more elsewhere) is outrageous.

Yes, so did we - that was my point about how awful the movie was bound to be...

Maybe they were *going* for camp. I hope so. I don't want to think that a major studio would deliberately make a movie like this otherwise.

Jamie Zawinski warned people away from this turkey months ago in his blog, with a link to the trailer on youtube:

Why, yes, that's the trailer (though I remembered more yellow and fuschia in the version I saw in the theater). I guess if you're out in California you get to see trailers for movies a lot earlier than the rest of us.

I'm assuming that [livejournal.com profile] jwz's crack about Springtime for Hitler was intended as humor. If it wasn't, though, it deserves to fail. That trailer is the vilest thing I've seen in a movie theater. Ever. It was even viler than the trailer for Step Brothers, and that was pretty awful.
