Burger...Space?

Lately, a computer game has been eating my brain. It's not any of the mighty real-time adventure games like World of Warcraft or Everquest. It's not even Battle for Wesnoth. No, the game in question is an open source clone of a silly arcade game from the 1980s. Remember BurgerTime? Well, now there's BurgerSpace.

A few years ago, courtesy of landley, I was experimenting with running BurgerTime under MAME. But the BurgerSpace clone works a lot better (at least until KMail crashes, which is still happening to me on a semi-regular basis). I'm also doing better at it than I ever did at the BurgerTime game--my high score is around 66,000, and I've gotten to level 8!

BurgerSpace preserves the silly graphics, and the silly sound effects, of the original, with only minor variations. It doesn't have the music, but since I always hated the music anyway, that's a plus.

Now I need to go do some law writing for work. After one more game. :-)

Installed it, fiddled around for five minutes, died several dozen times (there are a number of ways it doesn't work like the coin-op version), uninstalled it.

These days, if I need a time-waster that isn't mame, or podcasts, or programming, or books, or any of the 8 gazillion rss feeds, or being away from the computer entirely, I've been playing http://armorgames.com/play/1716/gemcraft

Interesting. BurgerSpace works reliably for me. The only time it *stops* working for me is when KMail crashes. Then, it comes up with the game screen entirely black except for the game credits. However, once I restart the machine, it's happy again.

As for the differences from BurgerTime, I don't mind them. I like this version of the game better, and I'm scoring better than I ever did at BurgerTime--either under MAME or in the arcade version.

I would like to try some of the MAME games again. I probably need a reinstall--maybe we can tackle that when you visit.

Oh I didn't say the _game_ died. I'm just not used to any overlap with the bad guys (instead of your feet overlapping) being a death condition.

Gee, and in my case I usually die because I've "overlapped" with a foot of one of the Evil Foodstuffs.... :-)

Point is, I don't have to chase you or esrblog to help me reinstall MAME to play BurgerTime, anymore. In fact, he's taken to playing it too--he plays BurgerSpace when we're about to get ready to go somewhere and he needs to be interruptable.
