...with the computer blues again.
My desktop machine (from which I'm posting this) is dying; it crashes, on average, every 5-15 minutes while I'm using it (it happens somewhat less often when I'm not) no matter what application I'm trying to use, even if that's the only application I'm running.
esrblog and I suspect that a thunderstorm that happened while we were at WBC fried something on the motherboard. That seems particularly plausible because there were thunderstorms while we were gone, and something also caused the heater on our waterbed to go temporarily haywire (when we got home, the waterbed mattress temperature was 114 degrees--not what we had set it for, needless to say).
Unfortunately, the best time for me to go in to work late to run the errand to have a new motherboard installed is Wednesday. So I'm unlikely to try posting again before then.

When DRAM goes bad, memtest86 is generally reasonable about finding it. When hard drives go flaky, the system's good at logging stuff in dmesg. Modern processors at least try to throw a machine check exception and reset. But power supplies are just _funky_ when anything goes wrong.

Particularly since the guy at Alpha Computer didn't *find* anything wrong. He had a YouTube video play for over an hour. No crashes. He ran a memory test (no problems) and vacuumed the dust out of the insides and charged us $40.
