Tonight,
esrblog and I went with
pmat and
shakati to see "How to Train Your Dragon." "Dragon" is one of the new crop of animated 3D features that have been popping up recently and, judging from the trailers before the movie, the trend is going to continue through the summer at least. Because
esrblog is incapable of seeing 3D effects and they tend to give
pmat a headache, we went to see it in the ordinary 2D version.
Even in 2D, the movie visuals are gorgeous. The action takes place on some very decoratively sculpted rocks somewhere in the North Atlantic, among a bunch of Vikings with "stubborn issues." These aren't the Vikings Eric Bloodaxe and Egil Skallagrimson moved among. This gang is more like Hagar the Horrible's people--horned helmets and Uggs all the way.
Surprisingly enough, it's another geek-as-hero movie, kind of like "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" but with a dumber, simpler plot. But the hero is resourceful and very likeable, the title dragon is extremely adorable while still being fierce, and the movie is a ton of fun. It's not as good as "Cloudy," but go see it anyway.
That's all I need to say, really, except for one quasi-spoiler which I'll put under an LJ-cut.
( Dragons... )
