To make a long story short, when it became clear that
esrblog and I wouldn't get to see the new Harry Potter movie with our friends next weekend, either, we all resolved to see it tonight.
I have mixed feelings about the movie. On the one hand, the casting remains immaculate. Imelda Staunton is perfect as Dolores Umbridge, the Mary-Kay pink authoritarian from the Ministry of Magic who wants to stop all of Hogwarts' wizards from performing any magic at all. Evanna Lynch is equally perfect as Luna Lovegood (complete with radish earrings the media claims Ms. Lynch made herself). Hogwarts, in its most brooding mode, visually dominates the movie, and it looks as appropriate as always.
The actors all turn in their usual convincing performances. Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson were born to play Snape and Trelawney, and are every bit as effective as in the other movies. The chemistry between Grist, Watson, and Radcliffe as Ron, Hermione and Harry continues to build. The score for the movie deserves best-seller-dom in its own right.
No, my only reservations about the movie lie in areas I can't discuss without discussing the plot, so it will have to go under an lj-cut.
