I was told that [livejournal.com profile] ssantara went to both, got sick at ConFusion, and met people who got sick at Arisia (for example). Arisia was a week later than normal this year, if that makes a difference.

Yes. Arisia was a week later than normal, which put it on the same weekend as ConFusion (21–23 January). You have been misinformed.
